A large majority of the kauri trees that grow in New Zealand are located in Northland. The Waipoua Forest on the west coast is home to 2000 years old Tane Mahuta (Lord of the Forest), the biggest kauri tree in the world. When you stand before these ancient trees you are in the presence of living entities that were mature trees before any humans came to these shores.

Wildlife Experiences
Northland
Viewing marine mammals and swimming with dolphins in their natural habitat is a privilege and a truly unique experience. In the Bay of Islands Maritime Park we encounter both Bottlenose and Common Dolphins and see a variety of whale species. The Brydes Whale is semi-resident in the bay and Killer Whales (Orca) are frequent seasonal visitors. Other species encountered on a not so regular basis are Humpback, False Killer Whales, Pilot, Minke, Sei and a rare treat are the giant Blue Whales. Regularly sighted on boat trips are the Blue Penguin, Australasian Gannet, various species of ocean birds and on occasion the New Zealand Fur Seal.
