Auckland & Northland

From Auckland’s vibrant cosmopolitan heartbeat to the incredible maritime playground that is Northland’s Bay of Islands, the northern part of the North Island offers an abundance of memorable experiences.

With just over 1 million people, Auckland is New Zealand’s main tourist gateway. Positioned between the Waitemata, Manukau and Kaipara Harbours, it is also the world’s most populous Polynesian city and a great place to begin any New Zealand journey.

Known as the “birthplace of the nation”, Northland is steeped in New Zealand history and is the place where the country’s founding document – the Treaty of Waitangi – was signed in 1840.

The Bay of Islands is a destination for those who love the Great Outdoors. From the stunning sub-tropical coastline to the myriad of dense native forests and the many islands that dot this aquatic playground, it is an area that offers so much.

Nature & Scenic

Northland

A large majority of the kauri trees that grow in New Zealand are located in Northland. The Waipoua Forest on the west coast is home to 2000 years old Tane Mahuta (Lord of the Forest), the biggest kauri tree in the world. When you stand before these ancient trees you are in the presence of living entities that were mature trees before any humans came to these shores.
