The first vines in New Zealand were planted in the Bay of Islands by the missionary, Reverend Samuel Marsden in 1819.
The industry is growing fast with the Northland Wine Growers' Association (formed in 2007) boasting a membership of over 50. Our vineyards consistently produce medal-winners and have established a reputation for chardonnays and pinot gris. Reds such as syrah (shiraz) and pinotage are just as highly regarded.
Visitors are welcome to call in for tastings and cellar door sales and some vineyards offer coastal or rural views with restaurants that cleverly combine Mediterranean ambience with a distinctive Northland flavour.

You’ll also be able to stock up your camper fridge with fresh local Northland produce from the variety of Farmers’ markets in the region:
Whangarei - every Saturday morning throngs of people head for the market, which is permanently based at the Water Street Carpark. Most shoppers go between 6.30am and 7.30am although the market is open until 10.30am. Their specialty is fresh, quality produce grown locally.
Bay of Islands - held in Kerikeri, every Sunday morning, is a much more leisurely affair. It began in October 2004 and is one of the country’s largest markets of its type. As well as fresh regional grown vegetables, it attracts speciality produce and gourmet goods including locally roasted coffee. Subtropical fruit abounds, whether in preserves, jams or jellies.
Paparoa Farmers' Market - held on Saturday mornings every fortnight at the Village Green in the centre of Paparoa village. Since its inception, the market has grown steadily and has maintained a core group of regular stalls with others changing according to the season. Highlights at Paparoa Farmers' Market are the locally grown seasonal produce, fresh flounder, oysters and smoked mussels, pickles and sauces. You will also find plants, olive oil, freshly roasted coffee and honey.
