Maui does not permit smoking in their vehicles. Maui reserves the right to retain a $220 cleaning fee if the vehicle is not returned in a clean condition. This includes smoking related cleaning.
Most parts of NZ have areas where free camping is available, provided the vehicle you have rented has toilet facilities on board. The best rule is to obey local signage, and ask at the local information centre for suitable sites.
It is important when travelling in a fully self contained campervan or motorhome that you dispose of the toilet and waste water in designated dump stations.
All maui vehicles that have toilets on board are approved to stay over at Department of Conservation land (DoC camps - 100s around NZ). Please visit www.camping.org.nz to find out more about free camping in New Zealand.
Maui provides a complimentary Travel Wallet that contains a free campground guide. The Travel Wallet also contains: AA Travel Guide booklet, Keeping it Green brochure, Supermarket Discount Card, New Zealand road and safety information and an Accident Report Card.

A Maui representative will demonstrate how to use your motorhome and empty the waste when collecting your rental. All of our branches have dump stations (except the Queenstown Branch, where the closest is at the local BP Petrol Station approximately 2 minutes from the Airport).
We aim to make your holiday easy. We have listened to many suggestions from travellers just like you, about how to eliminate any hassles that get in the way of your precious time away. So we have a range of exclusive maui services which you are free to use if you wish:
- Linen Exchange – if you wish to replace any of your linen and bedding for a freshly laundered supply, just swing by any of our branches during our regular opening hours.
- Valet Service – if you are travelling for over 21 days, you can arrange with the branch closest to you to have your camper returned to the spotless condition you picked it up in. To make an appointment for your valet service, all you have to do is call the branch you have selected 48 hours ahead of time.
- Express Return (available if you have selected the maui premium package) To help you get away with a minimum of fuss once you have returned your camper, you can simply drop off all sets of keys at the return desk. We would just ask that you do this during our branch opening hours.
New Zealand has an extensive network of holiday parks in all major tourist centres and in most towns. We recommend all holiday parks and campgrounds which have a Qualmark Rating in New Zealand and BIG4 Holiday Parks in Australia. They offer excellent recreational facilities, as well as resources to dispose of your waste water. They also have provision for you to plug your vehicle into 240V main power for vehicles that feature heating and/or microwave.
Freedom Camping:
Each area has different rules around where freedom camping (and parking of campervans) is permitted. Maui suggests that you contact the local Information Visitor Centre for more information. Due to the severe impact that freedom camping can have on our environment and for the safety of our customers, Maui suggests staying in recognised campgrounds.
Please note, only full self-contained motorhomes should be used for freedom camping and use approved dump stations to empty your toilet and waste water.
