The Legend of Maui

One of the most famed figures in Polynesian mythology is Maui - who was the inspiration for our name.

Around the Pacific, Maui's legend lives on in speech, in song, in carving and other traditional arts.  One such legend is of Maui who snared the sun god and made him travel slowly across the sky, so the days would be longer and filled with more sunshine.  Maui learned the ways of the birds when he was young and, if he needed to escape, could turn himself into a bird.  Maui cast his sons and one of his brothers into the sky, where they would shine forever as the morning star, the evening star and the guiding star.
